'I'm 38 And A Grandma – I Need An Alternative Grandparent Name That Won't Feel Weird'

A 38-year-old grandparent, who has a young baby herself, has asked others for alternative names to “grandma” that “won’t feel weird” because of her young age. She explained that her stepson has had a baby and she’s now a grandma: “My ex was quite a bit older than me … I raised this kid for 13 years before he moved away as an adult, so he’s my son through and through. “38 is entirely too young to be a grandma ... But I need to sign the ‘from’ on her Christmas gift,” said the new grandparent on Reddit. “What’s an alternative to grandma that won’t feel so weird?!?!? My oldest biological child is 13 and my youngest is 7 months, I just can’t wrap my brain around being called ‘Grandma’.” Here’s what people came up with in response to the request... 1. Stick to Grandma One respondent said: “If you’re a grandma, call yourself Grandma. Nana. Gran. All perfectly good names that explain your relationship to another person. A different name won’t make you any younger.” Another added: “Agree. It’s an honour to be someone’s grandma.” One commenter noted that by using the name “grandma” it will “emphasise how young” the original poster is. “When someone calls her ‘grandma’, all people are going to notice is the juxtaposition between the name and OP’s appearance,” they added. 2. Let baby come up with the name One Redditor suggested the grandparent could “wait till the baby is old enough to purposefully jabber and get named by the baby”. They added: “There’s a grandpa called Jeep out there because of this.” “This is what I was going to say,” added another commenter. “Your grandma name will be determined by whatever your oldest grandchild calls you once they start talking. Any attempts to steer the direction before then is [a] waste of energy.” Another suggested the parent’s stepson should get a say: “Honestly, this is a conversation to include your son in on. We always let the grandkids pick what they call us when they’re old enough. To some I’m Nana, to others I’m grandma.” 3. Alternative names to ‘Grandma’ In a bid to try and come up with “chic” alternatives, one person recommended using either “Mimi” or “Gigi”. Another person noted “Nana might not sound any younger, but it’s elegant and classy”. “There’s also Mimi, Gigi, Grammie, Nan, Gran,” they added. One parent said: “I’m thinking of going with Lala when I become a grandma. I would prefer Granny but my kids hate it.” “Coco, Kiki, I just heard one where the grandma was Lolly and the grandpa was Pop,” added another commenter. 4. Let a children’s cartoon decide... Or you could go for this option and let their favourite cartoon determine the name: “My MIL [mother in law] watched Pingu with our son and now she’s forever known as Noot Noot.” It’s certainly unique!
