Trump Announces New Navy Battleships Named After Himself

Trump said the two vessels will be equipped with hypersonic weapons, missiles, guns and lasers. President Donald Trump’s administration can’t seem to stop naming things after him. Trump, along with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan, announced the construction of two new Navy ships on Monday that they’ve dubbed “Trump Class” battleships. “The future Trump Class battleship, the USS Defiant, will be the largest, deadliest, and most versatile and best-looking warship anywhere on the world’s oceans,” Phelan said. Renderings of ships were displayed at the event and emblazoned with the terms “Trump Class” and “USS Defiant.” A concept rendering of the proposed Trump Class USS Defiant is displayed during an announcement of the U.S. Navy's new Golden Fleet initiative on Monday. The administration plans to start by building two vessels, with a long-term goal of manufacturing 20 to 25, Trump said. They’ll be equipped with hypersonic weapons, missiles, guns and lasers. “Each one of these will be the largest battleship in the history of our country, the largest battleship in the history of the world ever built,” Trump said. They’ll be “100 times more powerful” than past ships, he claimed, and some of the “most lethal.” According to an April 2025 post from the Government Accountability Office, the Navy has long struggled with delays when it comes to the construction of battleships. Trump claimed that the boats will be manufactured domestically, and he’ll be meeting with defense contractors next week to discuss faster production schedules for building military equipment. “We’re building them here, we have great Navy yards,” Trump said, while adding that he anticipates high demand for robots and workers in the process. He noted, too, that artificial intelligence would be a “big factor” in the ship’s design, though it was not immediately clear what he meant. Hegseth stressed that the new battleships were part of a “golden fleet” intended to send a message about US military strength and deter potential enemies from questioning it. He also cited strikes on alleged drug boats, which have faced scrutiny for a lack of transparency from the administration, while touting the Pentagon’s achievements. The boats join the “Trump-Kennedy Center,” “Trump Institute of Peace,” and “Trump Gold Card” as just a couple of the institutions or items that the president’s administration and allies have put Trump’s name on. “The US Navy will lead the design of these ships, along with me because I’m a very aesthetic person,” Trump said.
