'We are suffering' - Displaced families at Qoz Al-Salam campsite call for support amid food, water supply shortages

"Hundreds of displaced families sheltering at UNHCR Qoz Al-Salam camp in Sudan's Kosti area are struggling to meet basic needs as the ongoing conflict continues to uproot communities. Footage captured at the campsite on Monday shows people sitting outside makeshift tents, children playing with sand and eating porridge, and mothers caring for their families inside cramped shelters. Vendors can also be seen selling small amounts of food, while long queues form to fill their water canisters. "We are suffering from severe food and water shortages. Water only runs for two hours a day, and many people have lost access to education," Maryam, a displaced person from El Fasher, said. "This situation has made us dependent on outside help [...] We are in urgent need of support, and we pray for security in our country," she continued. Kaltoum Omar Mohamed, a displaced mother of five, described the strain of overcrowded living conditions at the camp. "We’re gathered in a centre with 23 families, 23 households. I personally have five children […], but we are all currently living in a very small space," she said. "It’s winter, and we have two blankets. My children have theirs, and I rely on layers of clothing. I cover the kids first, but it's still not enough," Kaltum added. UNHCR's humanitarian reports from late 2024 and early 2025 indicate that Qoz El Salam hosts a displaced site where aid organisations are assisting those fleeing violence in regions like Darfur. Displaced families, including South Sudanese refugees, are suffering from issues like heavy rainfall and resource shortages, requiring continued humanitarian efforts. Since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, more than 20,000 people have been killed, around 33,000 injured, and 12 million displaced. The UN estimates that 25.6 million people are now facing acute food insecurity."
