Needles to say, he's a hero! Filipino tour guide combats coral-eating starfish with coconut vinegar shots

"Off the beautiful coast of Cebu's Badian, the crystal-clear blue waters conceal an unfolding crisis as the spiny Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) are decimating swathes of coral, turning thriving reefs into barren skeletons. In this underwater battle, local tour guide and eco-warrior Bonifacio Jomio has emerged as an unlikely hero, wielding a simple weapon: a syringe filled with coconut vinegar. "Before Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai), the coral reef here was so beautiful. Now, the growing corals are being eaten and killed. I want to help our community," Jomio shared. Footage captured on Tuesday shows Jomio snorkelling and looking for COTS and later injecting coconut vinegar into them. Jomio explained that this technique is a game-changer. Unlike chemical solutions, the organic vinegar is lethal to the COTS but completely harmless to other marine life, ensuring that the delicate reef ecosystem remains undisturbed. "It is important to restore the corals so that different kinds of fish can lay their eggs and we can catch plenty of fish in the future," he said. "It's not easy because corals regenerate slowly, but I'm doing this so that the next generation can also experience seeing the beautiful coral reefs and colourful fish I've seen before," he added. His grassroots effort has created an online buzz and a powerful call to action, with viewers everywhere praising his direct intervention while calling for broader systemic support."
