'You'll have a better life here' - Petro urges Colombians in Argentina, Chile and US to return home amid anti-immigrant crackdown

"President Gustavo Petro called on Colombians living abroad to return home, insisting that 'people live better in Colombia,' while accusing Argentina, Chile and the United States of increasing crackdown on migrants. In a nationally broadcast address from Bogota on Tuesday, Petro said recent political shifts in those countries had an increasingly adverse impact on migrant communities, after their governments started to adopt policies that 'destroy migrant families.' "I call on Colombian citizens living in Argentina and Chile, and also those in the United States, to return home to Colombia. You will live better here. Political changes in those countries are increasingly treating Colombianness as an enemy," the president said. Petro added that his administration expanded support programmes for migrants - most of them Venezuelans - underscoring that Colombia 'is not a xenophobic country.' He also pointed to the return of thousands of migrants from the US during his term as evidence of the government's stance. We must take precautions. We should not remain in places where conditions are set to worsen. In Colombia today, people live better. [...] Already, 5,000 migrants have returned from the United States; they were brought back with dignity, not in chains," he said. Petro's comments come amid a shifting political landscape in the region, marked by the government of Javier Milei in Argentina, the recent electoral victory of Jose Antonio Kast in Chile, and the presidency of Donald Trump in the United States - leaders characterised by their hardline approaches to migration policy."
