"A bomb explosion ripped through a mosque in Gamboru, a town in Northeastern Nigeria's Borno State, leaving five people dead and at least 30 injured, prompting the closure of the surrounding market, according to police reports. Footage from the blast site on Thursday shows damage to the Gamboru mosque interior, with scattered prayer mats and shoes outside. The nearby market was closed, while locals blocked sections of the road near the scene. Eyewitness Mohammad Umar said the explosion struck as people were preparing for prayers. “There was a sudden loud sound, followed by dust everywhere. We ran for our lives. Many people died in the incident. I lost a colleague who also had a shop there selling wrappers; we were together that same evening,” he said. He called on authorities to act, describing the attack during the Christmas period as 'very unfortunate.' Another witness, Mohammad Modu, recalled the incident as deeply disturbing. “We are only here trying to survive by engaging in peaceful business, and this happened. I beg the authorities to ensure that this does not happen again [...] I pray that Allah heals those who were injured, and may Allah grant those who lost their lives entry into heaven,” he said. The blast occurred around prayer time, triggering panic among worshippers and traders in the densely populated area, which is largely populated by low-income residents. According to reports, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants have previously targeted mosques and crowded places with suicide attacks and IEDs. Maiduguri has been central to the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, aiming to establish an Islamic caliphate in Borno state. Security measures have been ineffective in preventing sporadic civilian attacks in northeast Nigeria."
