Magnetic force! PLA Navy reveals advanced aircraft catapult after decades of development

"The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy showcased its groundbreaking electromagnetic systems on the Fujian Aircraft Carrier on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in its naval development following two-decades of development. Footage captured at an undisclosed location shows the system undergoing operational testing, demonstrating high-velocity launch capabilities and precise, controlled braking. "It can meet the acceleration needs of carrier-based aircraft within a relatively short distance. And then, within an extremely short distance, it ensures the smooth function of the arresting gear," explained Bao Yu, Fujian Aircraft Carrier Officer. The Electromagnetic Launch System (EMALS) utilises a Medium-Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) power system, which will allow aircraft to accelerate from stationary to takeoff speed in two seconds. The Fujian is equipped with a flat-flight deck, rather than the traditional 'ski-jump' ramps seen on the PLA's other two aircraft carriers, Liaoning and Shandong."
