MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Jose Advincula, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila, urged Catholics to rediscover humility and reverence at the heart of Christmas, calling attention to the often-overlooked act of kneeling during the Profession of Faith, on Thursday. Advincula said many faithful rushed or forgot the gesture at the words proclaiming that Christ “was made flesh,” even though it marked the very center of the celebration of the Lord’s Nativity. He said kneeling was not merely an external sign of reverence but an act of thanksgiving and openness that allowed Jesus to truly dwell among believers, both in churches and in homes. The Manila archbishop invited families to draw near to Bethlehem by kneeling like the shepherds and the wise men and offering faith, love, and hope at the manger. He warned that when society bowed to wealth and power instead of humility, Christmas becomes shallow and empty, urging the faithful to turn away from darkness and kneel before Christ, whom he described as Emmanuel and the source of peace.
