It marks Israel’s lowest position in the index - developed by policy adviser Simon Anholt - for nearly two decades. The NBI assesses countries’ global reputations across six areas, including tourism, people, culture, immigration, exports and governance. Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy, Switzerland and Britain ranked among the highest, while Israel came behind countries including India, Kenya, Russia, Ukraine and Namibia. The Palestinian Authority, not an officially recognised state, ranked lower than Israel. The survey, conducted between August and September 2025, shows Israel’s overall score fell by 6.1 per cent compared with the previous year. Israel also ranked lowest for perceptions of exports and products, reflecting growing consumer reluctance to buy goods and services associated with the country. The report notes a significant shift between 2024 and 2025, with negative global sentiment extending beyond criticism of the government to include attitudes towards Israeli citizens, linked to the war on Gaza. Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israelis are increasingly perceived abroad as persona non grata. Since October 2023, Israeli forces have killed more than 72,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip Strip and the West Bank . Growing negative view of Israel Not only is global criticism of Israel on the rise, but more Gen Z respondents perceive Israel as " illegitimate " and " colonial ", Israeli media reported. Moreover, products labelled as "Made in Israel" are directly negatively affected, as boycotts continue worldwide. While the index does not track purchasing behaviour, BrandIL warned of wider economic risks, including falling global trust, declining foreign investment, damage to tourism, and the erosion of Israel’s standing in the international community. Israel’s global ranking in research studies and public opinion polls has fallen sharply since October 2023. A recent YouGov survey found public support for Israel in Europe at its lowest level in 2025, with fewer than a fifth of respondents in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain and Italy expressing a favourable view. The survey ran from 12 to 26 May. From Italy to Japan, most people have negative views of Israel, poll finds Read More » In the United States, a Pew Research poll published in April found that 53 percent of Americans now hold an unfavourable opinion of Israel, up from 42 percent in March 2022, before the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent war on Gaza. Democrats remain more likely than Republicans to express negative views - 69 percent versus 37 percent - but the proportion of Republicans with unfavourable opinions has risen 10 percentage points since 2022. Another Pew poll showed that the majority of people across the world have a negative view of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Views on Israel were mostly negative in 20 out of 24 countries surveyed by Pew between January and April 2025. While Arab and Muslim countries have long held negative views of Israel, the poll highlighted growing disapproval across Europe and East Asia. Positive perceptions of Israel are also declining in Western Europe and among younger generations. Inside Israel News Post Date Override 0 Update Date Mon, 05/04/2020 - 21:19 Update Date Override 0
