Musician Aris Mougopetros Arrested on Christmas Day Over Domestic Threat Allegations

Greek clarinet virtuoso Aris Mougopetros has been was arrested after his wife filed a formal complaint alleging domestic threats, police officials confirmed. The musician is currently being held at the Tripoli Security Department following his arrest under Greece’s flagrante delicto procedure. The incident occurred earlier on Christmas Day when Mr. Mougopetros visited the residence where his estranged wife was staying. According to police sources, his behavior was described as erratic, prompting the woman to report to the Tripoli police station and file charges for domestic threat (endo-oikogeneiaki apeili). Officers contacted Mr. Mougopetros, who subsequently appeared at the station and was taken into custody. His defense attorney, Dimosthenis Peppas, described the arrest as "pretextual," arguing that the musician had simply gone to see his children for the holiday. "A father is being held by authorities on Christmas and is being deprived of his children without any valid reason," Mr. Peppas told local media, adding that the charge of threat is unsubstantiated. The arrest caps a tumultuous year for the well-known folk musician, who suffered a serious hand injury in April 2025 caused by a firecracker explosion during a performance.
