"Internal security units moved to the site, imposed a security cordon around the mosque, and the competent authorities began investigations and evidence collection to pursue those responsible for this criminal act," the report stated. According to local media, the explosion was caused by a suicide attack that took place during Friday prayers inside the mosque. Meanwhile, Syria's transitional government had not commented on the cause of the explosion or the party responsible, as of the time of this report. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that the mosque targeted in the blast "is frequented by members of the Alawite community," and that the injured, including cases described as serious, were taken to the hospital for treatment."
