"Locals picked up their ice skates in Zeist on Friday as the Netherlands recorded its coldest temperatures since 1994, turning frozen trails into rare winter playgrounds. Footage shows residents gearing up to take on the ice as as others glide through the bustling frozen trail. "The uniqueness of this day is that it is Boxing Day - yesterday was Christmas Day. The last time we were able to do this was in 2012. This is the first time since 2012 that [we're able to skate on this] skating rink," one volunteer explained. As temperatures dropped, volunteers used sprinklers to freeze several layers of ice over trails, creating natural ice rinks for the local community to enjoy. "In the Netherlands it is very common to skate, but that is possible less and less often on natural ice," the volunteer noted. "Here, in the middle of the night, with volunteers and a sprinkler installation, we make ice on an existing inline skating track. That is so popular that - you see it now - about a thousand people go skating happily on a morning like this," he continued. Cold conditions on Christmas Day allowed natural ice rinks to open in several locations, including De Lier and Noordwijk, as temperatures stayed below freezing across much of the Netherlands."
