Farmers to hold key meeting at Nikea roadblock on Saturday, as mobilizations continue

Protesting farmers spent their Christmas at the roadblocks on major highways, waiting for decisions from their coordinating committees, they said on Friday. A major meeting will be held at the Nikea roadblock, between Volos and Larissa, at 12:30 pm on Saturday (Dec. 27), they said. As they noted, the meeting will serve as a preparatory stage for a national meeting where further actions will be considered, including an escalation of mobiliztions. So far, they said, they have not received specific commitments by the government on resolving their demands. In northern Greece, representatives of farmers at the Malgara roadblock in the Thessaloniki region said they were considering blocking toll stations in the direction toward Athens at 12:00 noon on Saturday. Farmers and animal breeders from Trilofo, Derveni, Kerdyllia, and Niselli will be meeting midday on Saturday, while Chalkidona producers said they will block the junction on the old Thessaloniki-Edessa national road at 3:00 or 4:00 pm for 2-3 hours on Saturday. Concerning the Exochi and Promachonas customs stations at the borders with Bulgaria, producers from Exochi said they would meet on Saturday afternoon on long-term blocking of the customs stations. The Evzones customs with North Macedonia will be blocked at 12:00 on Saturday for both cars and trucks, with the duration of closure to be decided. The Niki customs office action will be decided on Saturday afternoon, at a meeting of farmers from western Macedonia, who said they intend to continue their protest actions. In eastern Macedonia and in Thrace, farmers remain by the roads with their tractors but access to all vehicles is open at the Ormenio junction and the Kipoi customs office in Evros.
