Plumes from the peak - Mount Etna releases towering smoke clouds into Sicily's sky

"Italy's Mount Etna experienced a mild Strombolian eruption on Friday, releasing plumes of smoke from its summit. Footage shows thick smoke clouds billowing over the snow-capped mountain. The activity was reportedly concentrated at the southeast crater, which has remained the most active part of the volcano throughout 2025. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Toulouse issued an orange aviation alert following the eruption due to ash and gas plumes. Experts reported that activity at Mount Etna was declining. Mount Etna has been in a near-constant state of eruption since 2013, with five major outbursts recorded just last year. In August, the volcano's activity was described as 'very low intensity,' prompting a brief closure to tourists. Towering at approximately 3,369 metres (11,053 feet) above sea level, Mount Etna is both the highest and one of the most active volcanoes in Europe."
