Andrew Leung stays on mission in parting message

Outgoing Legislative Council president Andrew Leung on Saturday said he was honoured and grateful to be able to serve the public during his 21 years at the legislature. Speaking on RTHK's "Letter to Hong Kong" ahead of the end of his term, Leung said he felt that being a legislator was tantamount to having a mission. He noted that he had worked with other lawmakers on improving the economy and people's livelihoods, as well as helping the city recover from the pandemic. With eighth-term legislators-elect taking office on January 1, Leung said they shouldered a great responsibility in serving the public and should be down to earth. "When I was sharing my experiences with the lawmakers-elect, I specifically mentioned that a legislator shoulders a great responsibility. It is not just a job, and they should not do so for their personal glory," he said. "Instead, they should do so in the overall interests of the nation and Hong Kong. They also have to learn humbly, so as to be down to earth in serving the public." On the 15th Five-Year Plan that starts in the new year, Leung said Legco had the responsibility of coming up with ways to help the government in various tasks, including promoting high-quality economic development and actively participating in the development of the Greater Bay Area. He believes the legislators-elect will utilise their expertise and their understanding of the city to help the administration drive forward with innovation and change.
