'Disappointed, but not surprised' - Lawyer of Fmr Malaysian PM Razak vows to launch appeal after 15-year graft sentence

"Malaysia's former Prime Minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of four counts of power abuse and 21 counts of money laundering, with all sentences to run concurrently. After the court hearing in Putrajaya on Friday, Razak's lawyer Mohamad Shafee Abdullah, called the verdict a 'perfect result for the prosecution' and vowed an appeal will be launched. "Although we are extremely disappointed, but we are not surprised with the result because we sort of anticipated this," he said. "While we are disappointed, we are more agitated. Not in a bad way but agitated to do better in the appeal because by Monday, we will file the appeal." Najib has been accused of siphoning nearly 2.2 billion ringgit ($700 million) from the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund more than a decade ago. The former Malaysian leader was found guilty in 2020 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for misappropriating about $9.9m in 1MDB funds. His sentence was later commuted to six years. Najib, 72, will remain at Kajang Prison in Selangor, where his current sentence is set to end in August 2028, before beginning his new 15-year term."
