Alpine tragedy - Avalanches kill two skiers in French Alps

"Avalanches claimed two lives of people at winter sports resorts in the French Alps on Friday. Footage filmed on Saturday shows skiers riding the slopes, as well as La Plagne's skiing terrain fully covered in snow and a banner reading 'Difficult Track' near the skiing area could also be seen. "It's a tragic accident: an experienced mountain guide, who was in an area he knew well, was caught off guard by a slab avalanche," La Plagne Ski Patrol Director Luc Nicolino stated. A group of six skiers, led by a 60-year-old professional guide, was hit by an avalanche at an altitude of around 2,600 metres. Later in hospital, the group leader died of cardiac arrest. "Three people were also buried. One of his very experienced clients was able to dig them out before our arrival, which took only a few minutes. Unfortunately, one of the clients also suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the hospital in Grenoble," Nicolino added. On the same day, an avalanche near the village of Valloire below Mont Jovet at an altitude of 2,300 meters killed one skier and injured two others. "It's always a shame, but you can't take risks with the weather conditions. It's always a shame to lose people," a skier named Lucas remarked. "The last snowfall was at the beginning of December, so you have to be careful." Authorities said the avalanches occurred in areas considered low-risk, but recent weather had increased the danger. 'Low risk does not mean no risk,' the Savoie gendarmerie warned."
