"President of Ivory Coast Alassane Ouattara cast his vote in the 2025 legislative elections at Lycee Sainte-Marie in Abidjan on Saturday amid low voter turnout and political divisions. Footage shows the President and First Lady arriving at the polling station, as they greeted staff and cast their ballots. "It is a civic duty, and I am pleased to have fulfilled it. I call on all our fellow citizens to do the same," stated Ouattara. "I am confident that the process will unfold properly and that the results will reflect the will of the people." The president added that he 'hopes to put the elections behind us' after the widespread violence that followed October's presidential vote. Former President and opposition leader Laurent Gbagbo has boycotted the parliamentary election, accusing authorities of 'judicial harassment' and of failing to meet the conditions for a fair and free vote. The elections are being held just two months after presidential polls in which Ouattara was re-elected for a fourth term after receiving 90 percent of the vote. Gbagbo was barred from contesting, fuelling tensions between opposition parties and claims of voter repression. More than 8.7 million voters are expected to elect 255 members of parliament from 205 electoral constituencies. However, low voter turnout was observed at the start of polling. More than 2,700 candidates are reportedly running, including 800 independents. Voting began at 08:00 and was scheduled to run until 19:00 local time. The results of the vote are expected to be announced on Tuesday."
