German police shoot dead man after scissors attack at hospital

German police shot dead a 33-year-old man during an incident at a university hospital in the central city of Giessen on Friday, reported dpa, quoting authorities. Hospital staff had earlier called emergency services, reporting that a patient was threatening them with scissors, the Hesse State Criminal Police Office (LKA) said in a statement. Officers responding to the call encountered a man described as being in psychological distress. According to investigators, the man attacked police with the scissors, prompting officers to open fire in the late afternoon. The man died from his injuries. The state criminal police office has taken over the investigation for reasons of neutrality. Witnesses are being questioned and evidence secured, while specialists from the firearms forensics unit are also involved. Authorities said the precise circumstances and sequence of events remain under investigation.
