"Guatemala’s National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) said on Saturday it had identified eight of the 15 people killed in a passenger bus crash in the western department of Totonicapan. The accident occurred late on Friday at kilometre 174 of the Inter-American Highway, after the bus plunged into a ravine. In addition to the fatalities, 19 people were injured, authorities said. Footage filmed between Thursday and Friday shows the aftermath of the crash, including some of the victims at the scene and the handover of bodies at Inacif facilities in Quetzaltenango. “Well legally we feel for the whole family and everything that has happened. That was unheard of [this type of accident]. Until this morning, they informed us. That is why we are already here,” said a relative of one of the victims. Ivan Alegria, director of the Regional Hospital of the West in Quetzaltenango, provided an update on the injured. “Here, seven patients were received, of these, two were referred from Totonicapan with head trauma. Of these seven, yesterday, two were discharged, three were transferred today by air, and two remained admitted. About half an hour ago, a patient requested a discharge against medical advice, and we were left with only one patient admitted with a pelvic fracture,” he said. 18 ambulances and three rescue vehicles were deployed in the moments after the crash. Police said the bus driver remains in custody as investigators work to determine the cause of the incident. Fatal road accidents are frequent in Guatemala. In February, a passenger bus lost its brakes in the capital and plunged into a ravine, killing 54 people, one of the deadliest transport accidents in the country’s recent history."
