Maokdang

Together with my community in Andong, I recently visited the village of Bongha in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, where the late former President Roh Moo-hyun (1946-2009) was born and raised. In this village, he met his wife and prepared for the bar exam. After parking the car, I came across a volunteer standing under yellow umbrellas near the street. He was constantly greeting people while making pinwheels to give out to the visitors. On one corner of the yellow square paper he was using for the pinwheels, the phrase “the world where people live” was printed in Roh's handwriting. The volunteer said he has distributed these pinwheels for about 15 years. Roh's journey to school took one hour by foot. After various trials and experiences as a lawyer, he was elected as the ninth president of Korea in 2002. Donations exceeding 6 billion won ($4.08 million by current exchange rate) were collected for the election with the help of a citizen-led piggy bank campaign.
