KARACHI: The burial of former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Dr Shamshad Akhtar, was held on Sunday at Mewa Shah Cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her mother. She is survived by one sister. Earlier, the funeral prayer was attended by a large number of prominent figures from the public and financial sectors, reflecting Dr Akhtar’s stature and contributions to the country. Among those present were Adviser to the Federal Minister for Finance Khurram Shehzad, Deputy Governor of the State Bank Dr. Inayat Hussain, Dr Saleemullah, Managing Director of the Pakistan Stock Exchange Farrukh Hussain Sabzwari, Finance Adviser KPK Muzammil Aslam, Director of the Pakistan Stock Exchange Ahmed Chinoy, Director General Rangers Major General Muhammad Shamrez as well as senior officials from banks and other financial institutions. Meanwhile, the Board, management, and staff of the State Bank of Pakistan expressed deep grief and sorrow over the passing of Dr Shamshad Akhtar. In a statement, the central bank extended its heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones, praying that Allah Almighty grants the departed soul a place in His mercy. According to the SBP, Dr Shamshad Akhtar made history as the first woman Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. Her tenure is remembered for exceptional leadership, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service. She played a pivotal role in strengthening the stability and sustainability of the central bank and in advancing monetary and financial sector policies. Dr Shamshad Akhtar is widely remembered as a distinguished economist, a visionary leader, and a dedicated public servant whose contributions to Pakistan’s financial system will continue to inspire future generations.
