Man escapes Metsälä immigration detention centre in Helsinki

A detainee awaiting deportation escaped from the Finnish Immigration Service’s Metsälä detention unit in Helsinki on Saturday afternoon with the help of external accomplices and rope ladders. Police confirmed that two men attempted to flee the facility during an outdoor exercise period. A group of individuals outside the perimeter threw rope ladders over the three-metre-high fence topped with razor wire. One man managed to scale the barrier and escaped with the group. The second man became stuck near the top of the fence and was detained by staff.
