Philippines sees fewer road crash and firework injuries during holidays

(UPDATE) THE Department of Health (DOH) on Monday reported a 5 percent decrease in the number of road crash injuries compared to the holiday season last year. Its latest report showed a total of 414 road crash injuries recorded since Dec. 21. Of this number, 58 were driving under the influence, while 305 were motorcycle accidents resulting in four fatalities. Of those involved in motorcycle crashes, the DOH said 343 were not wearing helmets or other protective gear. Road crash injuries are among the cases the DOH monitors during the holiday season, along with firework-related injuries, non-communicable diseases, and mental health cases. Firework-related injuries, it said, also saw a decline this year, with only 125 cases recorded since Dec. 21 — a 27 percent decrease compared to last year’s 171. Assistant Health Secretary Albert Domingo said it is too soon to draw a conclusion despite the low numbers. “It’s too early to assess. Let us wait for the surveillance period to be completed,” Domingo added.
