'There's no easy team in this AFCON' - Morocco welcome back captain Achraf Hakimi ahead of crucial clash against Zambia

"The Moroccan national team stepped up preparations for their final African Cup of Nations (AFCON) group match against Zambia in Rabat on Sunday. Footage shows the players in high spirits as they warm up at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, with midfielder Brahim Diaz and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou joining captain Achraf Hakimi in the session. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Head Coach Walid Regragui welcomed the return of Hakimi, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since November and has yet to feature in the competition. "Could a coach do without a Ballon d'Or winner? I don't think people truly realise how much Achraf contributes to this team. We played two matches without our Ballon d'Or winner, without our best player, our leader, our captain," said Regraui. "Would we be a different team with Achraf back? Of course. We're talking about the best player in Africa, one of the best players in the world. And now, there’s no need to downplay it," he added. "What Achraf has done, his commitment, his leadership, the care he’s taken to return, is extraordinary." The coach also confirmed Hakimi will play some part in the match, while the right-back himself warned that Zambia will provide a tough challenge. "There's no easy team in this AFCON," said Hakimi. "Zambia are very strong, with players we have to respect. We needed to stay focused, do our job, and, above all, show respect to the opponent." The Atlas Lions currently sit top of Group A with four points after two games and need just a draw to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Morocco hosts the 35th edition of AFCON for the first time since 1988, featuring 24 national teams. The tournament runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026."
