Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law on Tuesday thanked the tourism sector for their understanding over the cancellation of the New Year's fireworks, admitting that the decision would affect some hotels and restaurants. The minister said on a Commercial Radio programme that it would be inappropriate to hold a fireworks display, out of respect for those affected by last month's Tai Po fire that took at least 161 lives. "As for whether the cancellation of fireworks display will affect hotel rooms and restaurants with ocean views and package deals, I admit it will. But I believe, given the special circumstances this year, everyone will understand the decision to cancel the fireworks, and I appreciate the industry for their understanding," she said. "If I were in the sector, I might not strongly support the decision either, but I would understand. But I would support it and be understanding." Law said she believes the arrangement will not negatively impact the number of tourists coming to Hong Kong, as the city saw a rise in visitor numbers over the Christmas holiday. "The number of overseas visitors broke the post-Covid record every day during the Christmas holiday this year. From December 25 to 27, there were between 48,000 and nearly 51,000 visitors. They accounted for around 32 percent of the total number of travellers." Hong Kong will usher in 2026 with a blend of live music and light shows at the pedestrian zone at Chater Road in Central.
