'Interim government failed to catch murderer!' - Dhaka blockade enters fifth day as thousands demand justice for slain activist Hadi

"Thousands of people continued to block a key Dhaka intersection on Monday, as protests demanding justice for the slain activist and youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi entered a fifth consecutive day. Footage shows protesters chanting slogans and shining lights in tribute during the sit-in demonstration at Shahbagh intersection. Many waved Bangladeshi flags and signs bearing messages such as ‘We want justice’. “The failure of our administration to catch the murderer is the failure of our interim government, the Home Affairs Advisor and the government's parties,” said protester Mehedi Sumon. "Six hours after shooting Osman Hadi, the murderer crossed the border and fled. But they could not catch them," he continued. Another activist, Mohammad Nayan, called on citizens to mobilise in the fight for justice and to stand together in honouring Hadi's death. “I think this movement will continue until the trial of Osman Hadi's murderer is over, it must continue. If people do not come out on the streets demanding justice for Hadi Bhai's murder, it will be a disservice to him,” he said. The sit-in demonstration was called by the youth-movement group Inqilab Mancha on Friday, with the group declaring it would continue the until their demands were met. Hadi, founder of the Inqilab Mancha movement and a prominent youth leader, played a key role in the 2024 uprising that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Hadi died in the hospital from gunshot wounds sustained in the attack on December 12. A police investigation is underway. Hadi's death triggered a fresh wave of protests across the country, with demonstrators calling for justice and accountability for his killing. His death comes just days after Bangladeshi authorities announced a date for the country's first elections since the 2024 uprising."
