'Heat is unbearable' - Chile issues red alert for Santiago and Central regions amid extreme temperatures

"Chilean authorities warned that the heatwave gripping Santiago and other central regions will continue until Saturday, January 3, urging residents to take safety precautions. Footage filmed on Monday in Santiago shows residents going about their daily activities, buying cold drinks and ice cream as the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) issued a red alert for Greater Santiago and five other central regions due to the ongoing heatwave. "We were out for a walk anyway, and we decided to eat here and enjoy the water because it is very hot," said a resident. Some people chose to cool off in the city's public squares, fountains and in the shadow of trees. "I clean windows, as I told you. And the heat is already unbearable, brother. I have to come every 10 minutes to hose myself down because the heat is immense," stressed Miguel, windscreen cleaner. The Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC) forecasts that maximum temperatures in Santiago will range between 33° and 36°C over the coming days. In its latest report on Monday, the DMC said extreme heat is expected in Coquimbo, Valparaiso, Metropolitana, O'Higgins, Maule and Nuble, where a red alert has been issued. Authorities advised residents to avoid long sun exposure, stay hydrated, and use sun protection."
