"Supporters of Honduras’ Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre) rallied outside the headquarters of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Tegucigalpa on Monday, demanding a full recount of votes in the Central District mayoral race amid allegations of electoral fraud. Footage shows demonstrators waving party flags and holding placards calling for a recount “vote by vote and tally sheet by tally sheet”, in support of Libre’s mayoral candidate Jorge Aldana. According to preliminary results released by electoral authorities, Aldana secured 49.9 per cent of the vote, narrowly trailing Juan Diego Zelaya of the National Party, who was credited with 50.1 per cent. Libre has alleged irregularities in 430 tally sheets, which it claims contain inconsistencies that could overturn the result. Around 2,500 people took part in the protest, during which Libre’s leadership, led by former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya Rosales, urged authorities to reject the outcome. Zelaya is the husband of Honduras’ current president, Xiomara Castro. “This declaration tomorrow is illegal; it doesn't meet the conditions to be recognised. So, out with the National Electoral Council of Honduras. It’s illegal and fraudulent. Out with President Donald Trump. He can’t come here and impose his will,” Zelaya told supporters. Under Honduras’ Electoral Law, the CNE is required to proclaim final results for mayoral races, including the Central District contest, by 12/30. Reactions from the candidates are expected following the electoral authority’s announcement on Tuesday. The protest was also attended by presidential candidate Rixi Moncada. Fireworks were set off outside the CNE building during the demonstration, although no major incidents were reported."
