'What matters now is being with the people' - Sheinbaum visits Oaxaca families after deadly Interoceanic Train derailment

"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum arrived in the southern state of Oaxaca on Monday to meet relatives of those killed and injured in the derailment of the Interoceanic Train, which left 13 people dead. During her visit, Sheinbaum travelled to a crematorium in Juchitan de Zaragoza and toured several hospitals in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where victims of the crash are receiving treatment. “Always be with them,” Sheinbaum said, referring to the care of those affected. “What matters right now is being with the people,” she added, declining to give a formal statement to the media. While visiting one of the hospitals, the president said the federal government would provide 30,000 pesos (around $1,675) in financial assistance to each affected family, alongside support for funeral expenses and other immediate needs. Earlier on Monday, speaking at her regular morning press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum outlined three priorities in response to the tragedy: assisting victims and their families, clarifying the causes of the derailment, and ensuring the safety of operations on the Interoceanic Train. The accident occurred on December 28, when a train on Line Z derailed between the localities of Nizanda and Chivela. Of the 250 passengers on board, 13 were killed, 109 were taken to the hospital, and 44 remained under medical care, authorities said. Mexico’s Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the incident."
