"Dozens of Polish farmers from Wiskitki on Tuesday held a tractor rally amid a nationwide protest against the proposed free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Footage shows farmers driving tractors with Polish national flags attached and banners, among others reading: 'Stop EU-Mercosur' and 'We are also fighting for you, the consumer.' One of the protest organisers, Kamil Szymanski, explained that amid 'downward-facing Polish protest' farmers rally at 'over 150 protest hotspots' on Poland's main roads and highways. "We want this (Mercosur) agreement to fail because we already have enough agreements. We also have a trade agreement with Ukraine signed and in force, and an agreement with India will soon enter into force. The influx of agri-food products is also enormous, and the costs we incur on the farm due to the Green Deal and climate policy are enormous, and we simply can't afford them," he explained. Szymanski also expressed frustration that farmers are being accused of supporting the government or aligning with pro-Russian narratives. "We are simply fighting for our patriotism, for our farms, for our land, for our production," he said. Poland recently failed to block the signing of the EU-Mercosur agreement after being unable to form a blocking minority. Following the vote, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland would impose its own quotas and tariffs if imports from Mercosur countries increased excessively. The demonstrations come amid wider opposition from farmers across Europe, who argue the proposed deal would expose them to unfair competition from lower-standard agricultural imports from South America."
