Poetry in motion - Famous Chilean poet-diplomat Neruda visits Soviet Union *ARCHIVE*

"Archive footage from 1949 and 1957 shows famous Chilean poet-diplomat, politician and Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda visiting the Soviet Union. Neruda can be seen reciting his poems in Moscow along with prominent Soviet poets and writers, as the audience gave him a warm welcome. The video also shows him visiting an archaeological site and an observatory near Yerevan during his stay in Armenia. In lighter moments, he was filmed barbecuing and toasting with his friends. Neruda was a dedicated Communist and admirer of the Soviet Union, seeing it as a leader in the fight against fascism, especially during World War II. In 1948, he was forced to go into hiding when Chilean President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla outlawed the Communist Party. After that, Neruda travelled through the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and received the Stalin Peace Prize in 1950 for his efforts. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971."
