Water bills to rise as of January 1, 2026, Athens Water & Sewage company says

Water and sewage bills will rise as of January 1, 2026, the Athens Water Supply & Sewerage Company (EYDAP) said on Tuesday. In an announcement, EYDAP said the increases were approved by the Independent Regulatory Authority of Sewage, Energy, and Waters (RAEEY) in the framework of the new regulatory state and the five-year regulatory period. The increases are expected to be in effect until 2029. As of January 1, the billing of water consumption and sewage will remain the same across all consumption levels. The only fee to rise is the fixed rate for water provision (an increase of 1 euro), while a fixed rate of 1 euro will be introduced for sewage (VAT to be added). The implementation of the new fixed rates will roll out gradually, depending on billing cycles of consumers. EYDAP said that it continues to offer the highest-quality and cheapest water among European cities, but also the cheapest water among Greek cities including Thessaloniki. It also announced that vulnerable groups will pay less on their bills, as the fixed rate will be cancelled in their case while the billing would remain the same. "EYDAP's social policy guarantees that no household will go without access to water," the company said. Water and sewage bills have remained the same for over 15 years, the company said, despite the rising cost of energy, cumulative inflation exceeding 28%, and the repercussions of the climate crisis, which are significantly burdening the water and sewage system. The adjustment of prices relates to funding for necessary infrastructure projects, worth 2.5 billion euros, which includes replacing old pipes, reducing water loss, digital supervision of networks, and resilience projects for water shortages and extreme weather phenomena.
