Mercado Medina in flames - Fireworks spark fire at San Pedro Sula market, at least 60 businesses destroyed

"A massive fire consumed part of San Pedro Sula's Mercado Medina on Monday, burning down businesses and affecting dozens of families. Footage shows first responders deployed at the scene, where flames can be seen engulfing a large part of the market. According to local authorities, the blaze broke out at a fireworks store and spread rapidly through a series of chain explosions, destroying between 60 to 100 businesses across a 10,000-square-metre site. Members of the National Police, the army and firefighting crews responded to the scene to battle the flames and assist those affected. The fire burned for more than four hours, sending towering columns of smoke across the city, while continuous explosions hampered efforts to bring it under control. No fatalities have been reported, though several people suffered burns, smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Dozens of merchants also lost their merchandise. San Pedro Sula Mayor Roberto Contreras said the fire was fully contained in the early hours of Tuesday. President-elect Nasry 'Tito' Asfura later announced a donation of 1.5 million lempiras (around $56,800) to support those injured and affected by the blaze."
