"Paraguayan President Santiago Pena on Tuesday expressed deep concern over a possible US military incursion into Venezuela, saying he has communicated these worries directly to President Donald Trump's administration. "I am very concerned, very concerned, and I have conveyed to the American government our concern about a military incursion in American territory. I wish that would not happen," Pena shared during a press conference in Asuncion. "We would love for a peaceful solution to that conflict to be found, but if there is no peaceful solution, I have no doubt that a military incursion is what is going to happen," he added. Pena also noted that in early December, the US released its National Security Strategy, emphasising the Western Hemisphere as a strategic zone to "prevent powers such as China or Russia from gaining influence over local infrastructure or economies". "[The US's] main rival is China, there is no doubt. And the United States is reviving the old Monroe Doctrine, a doctrine that was coined by President Monroe in 1823, where the United States established that the Western Hemisphere is its area of influence," he said. Pena's statements come after President Trump recently commented on a supposed drone attack against a Venezuelan port used by drug traffickers from the Tren de Aragua gang, something that the company operating the pier has so far described as an "industrial accident". The president's remarks follow reports of a CIA drone strike on a Venezuelan port facility last Friday. President Trump claimed the US had 'knocked out' the site, alleging it was used by the Tren de Aragua gang to load drugs onto boats. Venezuelan authorities have dismissed Washington's claims, with Primazol, the company operating the chemical plant, describing the incident as an 'industrial accident.'"
