Fisherfolk discover 81 pawikan hatchlings in Calapan

CITY OF CALAPAN — As the sun rose on the final day of 2025, fisherfolk in Barangay Lazareto reported a rare and encouraging wildlife event: the discovery of 81 pawikan hatchlings, or Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea), along the shoreline early Wednesday. The nesting event was reported to the Calapan Fisheries Management Office (FMO) at 5:30 a.m., after the pawikan hatchlings were found inside a shallow hole on the beach.
