Rome bans firecrackers and bangers over New Year. Rome has banned the use of firecrackers, bangers, rockets and other explosive material from 00.01 on 31 December until midnight on 6 January 2026. Those who fail to comply with the New Year legislation, signed by the city's mayor Roberto Gualtieri, risk fines from €25 up to €500. The ban on petardi and botti, which covers the entire area of Rome, excludes the use of safer and less noisy fireworks. The ban, usually announced at the last minute, has been in place for a number of years in Rome over the New Year period but tends to be widely flouted.
