"Guinea’s General Directorate of Elections (DGE) on Tuesday announced the victory of Mamadi Doumbouya in the presidential election held on December 28, marking the country’s first nationwide poll since the 2021 military takeover. Speaking at a press conference in Conakry, DGE Director General Djenabou Toure said the result remains provisional, pending judicial approval. “The candidate Mr Mamadi Doumbouya is declared elected to the presidential election of December 28, 2025, on a provisional basis, subject to validation by the Supreme Court,” Toure said. According to the official tally, Doumbouya, running under the banner of the Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD), secured 4,594,262 votes, or 86.72 per cent of valid ballots cast. His nearest challenger, Abdoulaye Yero Balde of the FRD party, finished second with 6.59 per cent (349,129 votes), followed by Faya Lansana Milimono of the Liberal Bloc, who received 2.04 per cent, equivalent to 108,117 votes. Voter turnout was reported at 80.95 per cent, with 5,608,520 ballots cast from 6,768,458 registered voters nationwide, the DGE said. The vote formally concludes a four-year political transition that began after Doumbouya led the overthrow of former president Alpha Conde. Since seizing power, the military leader has faced criticism from rights groups and political opponents over restrictions on political freedoms. More than 50 political parties were dissolved last year, while several high-profile opposition figures were barred or excluded from the race. Veteran opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure remain in exile, leaving Doumbouya to contest the election against nine other candidates."
