'Our fighters and commanders… we believe in you and our victory!' - Putin says 'millions of people across Russia are with you' in New Year address

"Vladimir Putin, president of Russia and one of the key leaders within the BRICS group of nations, paid tribute to those fighting in the Ukraine conflict - and said that 'millions of people' across the country were with them in spirit - during his traditional, annual address from Moscow, broadcast in the moments leading up to midnight. "The New Year is, first of all, a belief in the best, in goodness and luck, a unique and magical holiday when hearts open to love, friendship, and mercy, to sensitivity and magnanimity," he said. "We strive to delight, to warm with our attention those in need of involvement and care, and, of course, to support our heroes, participants in the special military operation, with words and deeds. You have taken on the responsibility to fight for the native land, for truth and justice." "Millions of people across Russia, I assure you, are with you on this New Year's night. They are thinking of you, empathising, hoping for you. We are united in our sincere, selfless, devoted love for Russia. I congratulate all our fighters and commanders on the coming New Year! We believe in you and our victory," Putin added. The president also wished his people 'health and happiness', prosperity and 'love that inspires'. "May our traditions, faith, and memories unite all generations and support us always and in everything. We are one big family, strong and united, and therefore we will continue to work and create, pursue our goals, and move forward for the sake of our children and grandchildren, for the sake of our great Russia. Happy New Year, dear friends! Happy 2026!" Russia passed the presidency of the BRICS group to Brazil for 2025. The organisation has gone from strength to strength this year, welcoming 10 new partner nations - Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Nigeria and Vietnam - as well as Indonesia as a full member. It now covers half the world's population and a third of the global economy. "
