A street cleaner has died after being hit by a goods vehicle in Yau Ma Tei on New Year's Eve. She had been transporting refuse to the junction of Waterloo Road and Ferry Street when she was hit by the vehicle as it made a left turn from Waterloo Road into Ferry Street at about 8 pm. She was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital with serious head injuries and was certified dead a short while later. Police arrested the 65-year-old HGV driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death, detaining him for further enquiries. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) named the cleaner as 57-year-old Li Haiying. Li was under the Yau Tsim District Environmental Hygiene Office and was mainly responsible for street cleansing work. In a statement, the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene Donald Ng said he was deeply grieved at the loss of such a devoted colleague. He offered his deepest condolences to Li's family, saying she had been with the department for over nine years and had served the public with dedication and perseverance. The department said it would maintain close contact with Li's family and provide all appropriate support and assistance to help them through this difficult time. Police are investigating.
