World leaders have been exchanging New Year’s greetings, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Xi using his address to express a desire to strengthen ties with Moscow while reiterating a warning against what Beijing sees as pro-independence forces in Taiwan, on the same day China’s military announced the end of live-fire drills around the island, while Putin said he was confident Russia would ultimately prevail in the war in Ukraine, despite a recent surge in diplomatic efforts that have yet to produce an end to the conflict.
