'We're moving towards calm, we managed the situation' - Tehran governor says protests are 'legal right' while 'limited number... disrupted public order'

"Tehran Governor Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian said on Thursday that the capital was 'moving towards calm' following protests this week. "Protests are a legal right for people on various issues," he said, referring to demonstrations over the cost of living in recent days. "In the past 2-3 days, part of society, meaning our dear merchants, have had protests regarding economic issues, foreign exchange rate fluctuations, and rising prices." He said that they had 'managed the situation' through the "provincial supply chain council with the police field management". "A very limited number of people took the protests to the streets and public places, and disrupted public order. The police fulfilled their legal obligation, showed restraint, and we are moving towards calm," Motamedian added. Iran’s capital has seen protests over economic conditions and currency drop against the dollar, with some analysts pointing to the impact of US sanctions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged last Tuesday to resolve the issue, while his adviser Ali Asghar Shafieian confirmed on Wednesday that the government “is taking measures to address the demands of the protesters who took to the streets.”"
