"Residents of La Plata, in Buenos Aires province, celebrated the start of the new year by burning huge paper mache effigies, including models of characters from movies such as Avatar or Lilo & Stitch, Sunday. Local residents kicked off the start of the new year by building several dolls or ‘momos’ as per their tradition, and setting fire to them. Dozens of these ‘momos’ were torched in the event which takes place annually on the last hour of the year, with huge sculptures of famous personalities or cartoons burned. The dolls compete for the prizes awarded by the municipality for the best designs."
