"Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani was sworn in on Thursday at the historic former City Hall subway station, becoming New York's first Muslim mayor. Footage shows Mamdani taking the oath moments after the New Year countdown struck midnight. The swearing-in was led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, with Mamdani placing his hand on the Quran. He then signed the official registry presented by City Clerk Michael McSweeney and, in a light-hearted moment, handed over the customary $9 administrative fee. "This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime. And after just having taken my oath to become the mayor of the City of New York, I do so also here in the old City Hall subway station, a testament to the importance of public transit, to the vitality, the health and the legacy of our city," stated Mamdani. The mayor-elect also introduced veteran officer Mike Flynn as the Commissioner for the Department of Transportation (DOT) during the ceremony. "I can't help but think back to the childhood me, who was endlessly fascinated by the city's subways, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure [...] I'm excited to hit the ground running and deliver real results for New Yorkers," Flynn shared. Mamdani, a democratic socialist and New York's first Muslim mayor, won just over 50 per cent of the vote after campaigning on sweeping social reforms, including free bus travel, affordable childcare, city-run grocery stores and universal Wi-Fi. He has previously accused Israel of 'genocide' in Gaza and has called Netanyahu a 'war criminal', pledging that he would have him arrested should he travel to New York. President Trump was openly critical of Mamdani during his mayoral campaign, labelling him a 'communist' and 'self-professed Jew hater', but later struck a more conciliatory tone, saying he was confident Mamdani 'will do a good job' after a White House meeting."
