"Dozens of residents from Syria’s southern province of Suwayda gathered on Wednesday in al-Turshan Square to commemorate the deadly events of the past summer. Footage shows families of victims and local residents holding a sit-in, carrying photographs of those killed and lighting candles in their memory. In July, clashes were seen between Druze, Bedouin tribes and government troops. The Syrian transitional administration promised to investigate and hold those responsible accountable. “I remember the bloodshed and the suffering. I remember the blood of the martyrs who defended their land and their honour. I remember the Bedouin attack on the Druze community, when innocent civilians were killed simply for being Druze,” said Ghazal al-Faour, a relative of one of the victims. Rabea al-Sharani, said that "nothing can make up for the loss of our martyrs." Intense fighting saw nearly 2,000 people reported killed, before a number of ceasefire deals. Ahmad al-Sharaa was appointed as transitional president last year, following the takeover of the country in December 2024 - and pledged to form an 'inclusive government'. However, attacks on minority groups were reported, including in Suwayda and on Alawites in the coastal regions.   "
