‘Eternal guardian of democracy and symbol of unity’ – Mourners throng grave of former Bangladeshi PM Khaleda Zia

"Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders, activists, and supporters gathered at the grave of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia after it was opened to the public on Thursday afternoon. Footage shows people praying and reciting the Holy Quran at Zia’s grave, with flower wreaths placed around the site. Zia was buried on Wednesday with state honours and was laid beside her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, in a park outside the parliament building. “She will always remain an inspiration for women. Seeing her gave me strength,” said Nishat Sheema, a visitor. “I want her words to become even more powerful. I want us to be able to uphold the ideals she left behind.” “She used to say one thing repeatedly: 'I have no country other than this one. Let my death be on this soil.' She passed away on this very soil, and that death was one of great honour. That death was dignified,” explained supporter Monzur Hossain. The entrance to Zia Udyan park was opened to the general public after noon on Thursday, after briefly closing due to security concerns. Since then, thousands of people have rushed to visit the grave and offer prayers. Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia passed away at Evercare Hospital in the capital on December 30 after undergoing treatment for about 40 days. On Wednesday, thousands of mourners, government officials, and foreign dignitaries attended her funeral at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building in Dhaka."
