Former Pres Bolsonaro discharged from hospital following surgery to resume 27-year prison sentence in Brasilia

"Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from DF Star da Rede D'Or Hospital in Brasilia on Thursday morning after an eight-day stay, during which he underwent several surgeries. Footage shows a police convoy leaving the hospital's grounds following Bolsonaro's discharge. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, was seen departing in a separate vehicle, waving to a crowd that had gathered in a show of support for the former head of state, During his hospital stay, Bolsonaro underwent four different procedures, including a scheduled inguinal hernia operation and treatments for persistent hiccups. Following his release, Bolsonaro was required to return to his cell at the Federal Police building to continue serving his 27-year prison sentence. Citing concerns over his health, Bolsonaro's defence team requested that he be placed under house arrest on humanitarian grounds, warning of a risk of deterioration. Courts have so far rejected those requests. In September 2025, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in an attempted coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The 70-year-old has faced recurring health problems in recent years, partly attributed to complications from a stabbing attack during his 2018 presidential campaign."
