'Families have told us about a complete lack of information!' - Reporters slam Swiss authorities as AG defends 'controlled comms'

"Swiss authorities were tackled about claims of a 'complete lack of information' for grieving families following the ski resort bar disaster, at the third press briefing from Sion on Friday. "We have been able to speak with quite a few families who talk to us about a complete lack of information. What do you have to say about that?" one reporter asked. "All communication must be conducted in a controlled manner and in a safe manner and in a way that aligns with the interests and respect of the families," Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud reacted. "That is why we do not make assumptions, we do not issue statements when we say or do something, when we talk about the number of injured, when we speak, it is truly a fact that is established." Eric Bonvin, general director of the regional hospital in Sion, added: "it is clear that we cannot address the concerns of the families whether someone had died or not, or if they had been taken care of elsewhere, we could not know that either; it was not within our scope. But what I can say is that at the hospital level, the information that was provided was strictly regarding the care of the individuals we were able to identify, because at the beginning there were also people who could not identify everyone immediately." 40 people have been confirmed dead and 119 injured, of many different nationalities. The blaze broke out in the early hours of New Year's Day at the La Constellation bar. Eyewitnesses and online videos suggested sparklers on champagne bottles had ignited the ceiling. The venue was packed with young people celebrating. "
