Catalan clash - Flick backs side to kick off 2026 in style ahead of derby showdown

"FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick praised a confident and rejuvenated Espanyol ahead of Sunday’s city derby, calling for composure and quality from his side as the league leaders aim to kick off the year with a victory. Footage taken on Friday shows the squad training at the club's Joan Gamper complex under the watchful eye of Flick. Forward Lamine Yamal took part in the session alongside returning midfielder Frenkie de Jong and goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Speaking ahead of the derby, Flick acknowledged Espanyol’s positive run of form and expects a tough challenge. "Last season they fought to stay in La Liga, and now it's different. They have confidence, they press really good. […] We have to be calm in this match, we have to play our best football, and we want to play. In the end, I think we also have a lot of quality to win there," Flick told reporters. The German coach also addressed the spotlight on goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who returns to RCDE Stadium after joining Barcelona from Espanyol in the summer. "He's always focused on the situation. And you can see it. He played a fantastic half-year here in Barcelona, and he showed why the decision was right. So I have no doubts about that. He is on a top level and has a really great quality, and he's our number one," added Flick. Barcelona went into the winter break four points clear at the top of La Liga with 46 points, while Espanyol currently sits fifth with 33 points after 18 games."
