MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino based in Milan, Italy was reportedly injured in the fire that broke out in a bar at a resort in Crans-Montana, Switzerland at the height of the New Year revelry, which killed at least 40 people, according to Philippine Honorary Consul to Lugano Margherita Maffeis. The Philippine Embassy in Berne, Switzerland, and the Philippine Consulate General in Milan have yet to issue an official statement concerning the report that came out on The Filipino Correspondent Network (TFCN), a community newspaper in Lugano, Switzerland which quoted Maffeis in an interview dated Jan. 2. The same report said that Maffeis declined to release further details and that any additional inquiries should be submitted in writing pending coordination with Philippine authorities. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday said that there were no Filipino casualties in the fire based on an initial report by the Philippine Embassy in Berne, Switzerland. The TFCN and other local newspapers in Switzerland named the 16-year-old Filipino who, during the blaze, had managed to call his father to tell him that “half his body was burned” before losing contact. An Instagram post on Friday night (Philippine time) on the community in Crans-Montana appealed to the public to call the victim’s parents, as he was “taken into care” by emergency services. (Editor’s Note: As a matter of policy, The Manila Times will withhold the name of the victim, a minor, in its report pending confirmation from the DFA and other official sources.)
